The Navy court-martialed five sailors, charging each with forty-four counts of manslaughter--including two apprentice airmen, the chief of the ordnance section, and Capt. John Iarrobino. All were acquitted because a defect in the Mark 24 flares were found to ignite when jarred. The Navy changed the flare design and crew numbers were increased
To this day, this incident is used in training.
