Mad Cow Disease is also Known as Bovine spongiform encephalopathy. BSE is “a progressive neurological disorder of cattle that results from infection by an unusual transmissible agent called a prion.(modified protien)" (CDC) This disease is unrecognizable by the immune system and progresses to take over all neurological function of the cow. The brain swells and becomes somewhat spongy. (pictred right) This eventually leads to the death of the cow.
Mad cow began in the 1970's as the first cases were ofically confirmed in 1986. Mad cow was never a severe threat to the United States but the United Kingdom was severly imacted, it was dangerous. Mad Cow peaked in 1992-1993 an has been on the steady downhill ever since.
Some tell-tale signs of BSE include Incoordination and trouble walking or getting up. Any nervous or violent behavior can also be attributed to this disease.
Mad Cow disease, as previously explained, is not a bacteria or a virus. This means that Mad Cow is not conagious through air or close contact.
Md Cow has ben aqured through consumption of feeds with runints components in it. Eating the previously infected will infect the consumer. This is why ruminent feeds have been banned.
Cattle and beef consumers are really the only people at risk of Mad Cow Disease. Recently, thhose risks have signifiantly diminished. Ruminent feeds have been bannd and the FDA has rules, regulations, and tests to keep the consumers safe.
Humans can get Mad cow disease, however, it has a different name. Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD). This disease does the same to humans as it does to cows and results in dementia and death.
The cause of Mad Cow (BSE) is not entirely known. Sometime after 8 years of age, a protien is mutated into a piron and it attacks nervous tissues. Cow who who have it under the age of 8 most likely consumed feed made from the infected meat or bones of another. You can NOT get BSE from drinking milk or dairy products.
This disease is fatal and needs to be prevented, however, there is no sure fire way to prevent this disease. There is no vaccination like many other diseases. The US has banned the use of any ruminent feeds in order to prevent mass out break. They have also banned imports when there is an outbreak.
As mentioned earlier there really is no effective prevention. There is also to effective treatment for animals infected with BSE. This diesease is fatal and the best thing to do in this case is euthanasia.
