CHILE

Chile

Background

Surrounded by deserts to the north, by ice in the south, by the mountains of the Andes to the east and by the Pacific Ocean to the West.

Its surface covers 4,200 km.

Elevation Extremes:

Lowest Point - Pacific Ocean = 0m

Highest Point - Nevado Ojos del Salade = 6880m

Great diversity of climates: Desert (Atacama) Subtropical (Easter Island) and Polar (Antarctica)

Export

Fishing

8th largest fishing nation.

4% of the world's total seafood production.

60 species of shellfish and seaweed.

Chile earns more than $5.7B through their seafood export - Salmon being their most lucrative farming market.

Whats going wrong?

What's being done?

Different types of limited entry systems are now defined in the law and applicable to Chilean fisheries.

The Artisanal Reserve gives small-scale coastal fishermen Priority Access to help incentivise legal fishing.

Territorial User’s Rights in Fisheries were incorporated in the law to enhance self-regulatory practices among artisanal fishermen.

FORESTRY

Forrest takes up to about 30% of total Chile's area

Representing 14% of the value of the country's total exports

Produces a wide range of wood products, primarily from their radiata pine and eucalyptus plantations, for both export and domestic markets

Forestry

Current Situation

What has happened?

Over 95 percent of remaining intact forest is in southern portions of the country.

In the north, native forests have been highly fragmented.

In central portions of the country -where most of the logging industry is concentrated - only a tiny percentage of native forests remain within intact tracts.

Agriculture

Historically agriculture is one of the bases of Chile's economy

Second largest export sector behind copper mining.

Produces a wide range of wood products, primarily from their radiata pine and eucalyptus plantations, for both export and domestic markets

Agriculture

What happens now?

As of 2022, agriculture account only less than 4.9% of the GDP and employed 13.6% of the country's labor force. These numbers have falled drastically over the last decade.

Agriculture sector is facing problems of water scarcity and soil erosion, and the richness and abundance of birds of prey

What is

happening now?

Ground water

  • Groundwater is water held underground. It is important because it helps the flow of rivers, sustains wildlife, crops, and supplys water to communities.
  • Water availability in Chile has dropped down to 10%-37% over the past 30 years due to draught caused by climate change.
  • Also Chile treats water as private property causing access to be scarce for individuals. In fact, water availability is predicted to fall 40% by 2070. This will make the natural resource value continue to increase.
  • Chile's economy is based on three water thirsty industrys:
  • Mining, Agriculture, and forestry

Groundwater

Mining

15% of Chile's GDP

World's largest copper producer with 29% of global share.

World's second largest producer of lithium with 22% global share.

Other mineral: Gold, Silver, iodine, rhenium, sodium, and potassium nitrate.
