Positive Space

Our Data

The Five C's

Positive space is the space filled by the main item in a work of art. The white area in this image shows positive space.

Space

We collected our data on poster boards where the class shared their thoughts about the Five Cs through art work and writing. After analysing this data, we have found similarities and differences between each "C", and created a space that promoted community and relationships. Through our data we have gained new perspectives towards decolonizing ways of healing

Negative Space

The Five C's (Ceremony, Curiosity, Compassion, Community, Connection) are an important aspect of community wellness. The Five Cs value the importance of sharing, connection, and focus on relational approaches to healing.

Is an area or distance between, around, or within an item.

Negative space is made up of the spaces around the positive space. The black area in this image shows negative space.

HEALING CENTERED ENGAGEMENT

Compassion

Curiosity

Physical Texture

Through Arts Based Methods

An artist can create texture a person can actually feel on the artwork’s surface.

Texture

There were many similarities in what curiosity meant to the class, such as

  • active listening
  • self-reflection work
  • open-mindedness
  • "Kinoomaagewin" was shared with our group, meaning every question has an answer in the land

The ability to share stories as our classmates added their ideas to the poster created a positive environment, fostering curiosity and learning new concepts such as "Kinoomaagewin" of how the land plays a role in well-being

After analyzing the data there were repeated thoughts and ideas about compassion.

These thoughts were:

  • being understanding
  • being kind
  • listening to others
  • having empathy
  • having a resting space

Other Ideas were:

  • being kind and forgiving oneself to have an open heart that will allow love to be given to others
  • treat others how you want to be treated

This research method allowed us and our participants to see other people's views and thoughts about compassion. This was important because we as researchers as well as the participants saw a wider view and understanding on compassion.

Refers to how the surface of a work of art feels or looks like it would feel.

Implied Texture

An artist can use pairing or drawing techniques to make flat artwork appear to be textured.

OUR GOAL

Connection

Community

The goal of our research project is to focus on the importance of Indigenous methods of healing, and how the Five Cs (Ceremony, Curiosity, Compassion, Community, Connection) are an important aspect of community wellness. The collection of data allowed us to start conversations around well-being in Indigenous communities; this conversation opened a space where stories were shared and questions could be asked, promoting Indigenous frameworks of the Five Cs

When discussing the connection part of the 5 c's of healing engagement, a large focus is on the development of meaningful connections with family and culture. Some classmates chose to share traditions of their community that foster connection, such as the concept of Saunik.

Saunik:

When Inuit child is born, they are given the name of another person, who becomes their Saunik (namesake)

The child takes on the spirit of the person whom they are named after.

Some group members connected this to their own culture, such as in Greek culture, we have a very similar tradition of passing along our names to symbolize the continuity of life.

Example:

The first born child is named after the paternal grandfather

The second child is named after the maternal grandfather

The third born child is named after the paternal grandmother

The fourth child is named after the maternal grandmother

Communities have a critical role in influencing people's lives and well-being. Through the conversations and collecting data through a group art based method, we witnessed emotional and social support.

Major views of our classmates:

  • Importance of expressing ideas visually and verbally
  • Understanding and wholesome relationships constituted community
  • Living in harmony is better for well-being
  • Important to accept differences

Wampum

  • learned the concept of Wampum
  • A belt made out of beads that symbolizes colective memories, cultural identities, and diplomatic relations between Indigenous nations
  • Often used during ceremonies creating a feeling of community and belonging
  • Reaffirms sense of purpose in well-being and shows how art can bring community together
