STEAM Basics

Students Participate in STEAM

Science: The study of the natural world.

Technology:

One surprise—the STEAM definition for technology includes any product made by humans to meet a want or need. (So much for all technology being digital.) A chair is technology; so is a pencil. Any product kids create to solve a problem can be regarded as technology.

Engineering: The design process kids use to solve problems.

Art: Literature, performing arts, illustrations, music, design

Math: The language of numbers, shapes, and quantities that seems so irrelevant to many students.

Developing Librarian Made STEAM Projects

Developing Librarian Made STEAM Projects

1. Materials - decide and list your materials for your students

2. Scenario - Background info that puts problem in context

3. Content - by solving this problem are students learning something new or building on something they already know?

4. Parameters - List acceptable materials, time limits, design restrictions, etc.

5. Evaluation - needs an evaluation component - rubric, questioning, testing, head-to-head, etc

6. Summary - great summary questions:

  • What did you like most?
  • How could your solution been improved?
  • How could you use solutions from your classmates to improve yours?
  • What different materials would be helpful?
