Bernard Silver is a classmate of Norman Joseph Woodland and they worked together on developing the barcode.

On Oct. 7, 1952, Mr. Woodland and Mr. Silver were awarded United States patent for their invention — a variegated bull’s-eye of wide and narrow bands, named it as “Classifying Apparatus and Method.”

How did earlier bull's eye barcode evolved into today's barcode?

In the early 1970s, at IBM, George J. Laurer worked with Norman Joseph Woodland designed the today's familiar black-and-white bars of different width called Universal Product Code (UPC). It became possible because of the advancement in the laser technology.

Explanation of barcode

Explanation of barcode

UPC-A barcode for a Campbell's Chicken Noodel Soup is "051000012517". The last digit is the check digit "7", and if the other numbers are correct then the check digit calculation must produce 7.

• Add the numbers in the odd number (1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11) positions = 0+1+0+0+2+1= 4

• Multiply the result by 3 = 4 x 3 = 12

• Add the numbers in the even number (2, 4, 6, 8, 10) positions = 5+0+0+1+5=11

• Add the two results together = 12 + 11 = 23

• Subtract the result of the number from the next highest multiple of 10 to get the error check digit = 30-23 = 7, therefore, check digit value is 7.

Types of barcodes

Types of barcodes

1-Dimensional barcodes are Universal Product Codes: A, B, C, D and E. UPC-A codes are most commonly used in grocery stores of United States.

2-Dimensional bar code is QR (Quick Response) code. They carry information both vertically and horizontally.

Benefits of barcodes

Benefits of barcodes

  • Packages and products can be identified with a high rate of accuracy, eliminates the possibility of human error.
  • Advantage of barcode scanners is that they can scan hundreds of coded packages as the boxes make their way
  • down conveyor belts
  • Companies can track their inventory status because of barcode usage.
  • Implementing a barcode technology in a company is inexpensive compared to other inventory mcontrol methods.
