UPC-A barcode for a Campbell's Chicken Noodel Soup is "051000012517". The last digit is the check digit "7", and if the other numbers are correct then the check digit calculation must produce 7.
• Add the numbers in the odd number (1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11) positions = 0+1+0+0+2+1= 4
• Multiply the result by 3 = 4 x 3 = 12
• Add the numbers in the even number (2, 4, 6, 8, 10) positions = 5+0+0+1+5=11
• Add the two results together = 12 + 11 = 23
• Subtract the result of the number from the next highest multiple of 10 to get the error check digit = 30-23 = 7, therefore, check digit value is 7.
1-Dimensional barcodes are Universal Product Codes: A, B, C, D and E. UPC-A codes are most commonly used in grocery stores of United States.
