What is it?

Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior common among school peers that involves a real or perceived power imbalance.

INTRO

HOW TO IDENTIFY?

  • Bullying is deliberate

  • Bullying involves a misuse of power in a relationship

  • Bullying is usually not a one-off

  • Bullying involves behavior that can cause harm

Bullying can happen anywhere, in person or online (cyber-bullying), at any time, and can be verbal, physical or social (relational). It can be obvious or hidden.

VERBAL

  • Teasing

  • Name-calling

  • Inappropriate comments

  • Threatening

  • Feel disconnected from school and not want to attend

  • Have lower academic outcomes, including lower attendance

  • Lack quality friendships at school

  • Display high levels of emotion that indicate vulnerability and low levels of resilience

  • Avoid conflict and be socially withdrawn

  • Have low self-esteem

  • Become depressed, anxious and lonely

  • In extreme cases, have a higher risk of self-harm and/or suicide

  • Display high levels of aggressive behaviour which can impact on their future

  • Struggle to develop and maintain effective relationships

  • Have difficulty integrating into the workplace
