Nan's favourite things to do when she was a child:

Nan's Childhood

  • She was a bit of a tomboy but loved playing with her dolls
  • Playing with her sisters bike was what entertained her at home but she wasn't allowed to have a scooter or roller blades of her own because her mother didn't want her to be a tomboy.
  • Nan LOVED climbing trees
  • She was also in brownies and guides

Travelling

Senior school

Junior school

school

Senior school wasn't any more fun than Junior school worse in fact! There wasn't as much sport in senior school which was disappointing for Nan because she loved sport. There was one teacher she liked and that was her English teacher.

Nan didn't like school because it was very strict. She had to sit in rows with the other pupils and listen to the teacher, who she found quite boring. Most of the time she looked out the window and daydreamed. One of the only things she liked about primary school were the sporty things.

Jobs around the house

Jobs around the house

Making Butterfly cakes was something Nan had to do every Sunday as well as dusting a brass strip on the door step. Her sister had to iron every sunday. She sometimes made Cheese pudding wich was: milk, egg, cheese and bread. The Cheese pudding was simple because her parents didn't have much money when she was young.

Travelling

Nans first real trip was when she went skiing in Switzerland. She went with her church youth group, when she was about 16. Nan hadn't been to any other country before, apart from a trip to London which doesn't really count. This was because her family didn't have the money to travel.

Grandad's Childhood

Grandad's Childhood

When grandad was a child he liked to play with Meccano which is basically screwing things together to make things like cars and airplanes.

What Grandad did after school

School

school

Grandad didn't like school. One of the reasons was because he was small and this was a disadvantage in sport. Another reason was because of his Geography teacher, Mr Ferris. Mr Ferris always smoked black cigarettes and stank of smoke. Sometimes the classroom stunk as well. Grandad went to a grammar school which means you have to take an exam to go there. He left school at 17 after not doing very well in his exams.

facilities

Mangle

Facilities

Grandad's family didn't have a washing machine so his mum always washed things on a Monday. They used a mangle to do the washing. Grandads family got a black and white television when he was 12 and he liked watching cartoons.

What Grandad did after leaving school

After leaving school at 17 Grandad worked at a shop because that's what his dad did. He then moved to London to work in a men's shop. Later he moved back to Exeter and worked in Thomas Moor where his dad was director. Grandad then became director and worked there for forty years.
