On December 5, 1782 Martin Van Buren was born in Kinderhook, New York. At a young age he became a lawyer and got involved with New York politics. In the 1820s he was recognized for his skill in politics and bringing in votes, he was also known as the leader of the Albany Regency. In 1821 he was elected into the senate. By 1827 Van Buren emerged as the principal northern leader for Andrew Jackson and Andrew Jackson awarded Van Buren by appointing him secretary of the state. Van Buren was friends with Andrew Jackson and was elected vice president because of it.

In 1836 Martin Van Buren was elected president and was the first president born on U.S. soil. Van Buren helped build the modern democratic party. Van Buren gave his first presidential speech on March 4, 1837 about how good America is. But less than 3 months later the panic of 1837 made Americans lose money and their jobs. During this time hundreds of banks and businesses failed, and thousands lost their land. This depression lasted about 5 years. Due to his inability to change the economic state, he was not reelected for a second term.

After losing he continued to help the democratic party but never held another major office. He lost popularity when he did not support Texas joining the union. He wrote his memoirs, traveled, and spent time with his family in Kinderhook, NewYork before dying on July 24, 1862.
