Munnar

Overview

Kerala is well known for its magical beauty. Munnar in the Idukki district is acclaimed as one of the most desirable hill stations in God's own country. In the past, it was an important summer retreat spot of British. The local language translated the term 'Munnar' as three rivers. This mediates the three rivers, River Periavaru, River Mattupeeti and River Nallathani that flow through the region.

One of the most beautiful places to enjoy tea tourism. The tea plantation of this region allow tourists to stroll and stay. The popular brand Kannan Devan is established here. This is also the nature for Neelakurinji, a bluish purple flower that blooms only once in 12 years. Munnar also holds the highest peak of Southern India; Anamudi. This peak is open for tourists to trek to the top. The tourism season starts in October and ends in May. The place is at prime beauty throughout the year except during the rainy season. The summers are mild and short-lived here. By the middle of June we can experience showers, which last until September. During winter season, the place becomes slippery and many activities will be closed for the season. ghats mo

Ponmudi

Overview

Ponmudi is a breathtaking hill station situated at the southern stretch of western ghats located within a short driving distance from Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala. Mankkayam Falls

Situated around 45 km north-east of Thiruvananthapuram, Mankkayam is one of the famous Ponmudi tourist places. The Chittar River emerges from the massive hill range of Chemunchi and flows down through the dense forests creating a tributary called Mankkayam.

The two most mesmerizing waterfalls in this region include Kalakayam and Kurissadi. The area around the Manakkayam waterfall is covered with thick forests. After spending enough time at this serene spot, you can also head for a trek to Varayadin Motta which is home to the endangered species of wild goat.

Poem

A dissident mongrel deer

With an honorary degree in human psychology

Pressing against barbed wire

To be fed by fellow prisoners. Our sudden

Explorers

Returned with smooth round stones

To suit their different sizes. Our itching

Horticulturists and trekkers

Slippers in hand scratched themselves

Back to reality. Ears blocked

Two hours filled

With stray coughs and one vomiting later

When we retraced our steps to the coach

And hurried down

Hairpin bends with the sun

And the silent ageless hills

Sticking to the mind

Like the passionate leeches of Ponmudi

A young girl asked:

“What was there to see?”

With songs laughter catcalls and mixture

We snaked up Ponmudi; the drizzle

Teased us from outside and the cold wind

Slanted into

Celluloid city-bred eyes. We got down

Twice or thrice to strike

Ungainly poses at unusual places

And cursed the mist

For taunting us —

Grave

Small children and disinterested

Tall women picking tea-leaves

Followed us up as we braked

At the top. Tailor-made for the tourist trade:

Cottages, restaurant, and a shop selling

Rubber slippers, chocolate and Carefree

Woke up to receive

A camera – clicking

Giggling honeymoon couple

Five unassuming strangers

And us. We wandered and observed

As the drizzle dried up

Tiptoeing away with our cigarette packs

The kleptomaniac wind at work, We met

Poem

There we did bunch of activities,

Mountain climbing was not a “play of ease”,

With the addition of cold breeze,

The chilled river water during “monkey jumping” was on our knees.

How can I forget that rafting?

Contemplate about it; it still gives me a sting,

There we learn that a God is the king,

The rest are attached to God’s string.

The expedition was merrymaking,

The real pie of the trip was trekking,

Another one was park-walking,

Both cases were full of enjoyment and talking.

The bullet rides were the best,

Wandering village to village, in search of a lost chest,

To the top of the mountain from our nest,

The world seemed too small from the mountain’s crest.

“Ocean of talks” done in a small way,

There everyone wanted to remain stay,

But responsibilities can’t be kept away,

We did collect memories from there and drove to our home way.

A journey once again goes well,

Listen carefully, what I’m going to tell,

Everyone filled with high exuberance spell,

The journey has ended with sweet memories as a caramel.

We boarded our bus at late night,

When the whole city was sleeping tight,

We were ready with our bags freight,

Hullabaloo was of ours only, in that quite.

The bus trip was snooty,

Forget all, our destination was fruity,

The recent tour was to Manali city,

A place surrounded by Nature’s beauty.

On seeing our camp side we were contented,

There we were very well attended,

Thank GOD!! We were away from the Delhi’s congested,

The life is simple there but is splendid.

Our traveling list includes from Old Manali to Solang Valley,

Everyone did behave with as one another pally,

Wherever we go, it looks like we are a rally,

From that heaven, nobody wanted to come back to Delhi.

Poem

Nestled among the charming Dhauladhars,

Is the quaint town of Dalhousie,

Infusing life and vigour into the spirits of the travellers,

When they sneak into the town looking lousy.

Far away from the hustle-bustle of the plains,

Time tends to stop stills in this tiny town,

Every other creation of God here has their own plans,

To slog as quick and hard as the slug in brow.

Blessed with pines, deodars and oaks,

The charm of this place reminds one: of the English countryside,

It is for the same reason why the lord brought here his flock,

And converted this nature's gift' to a town and took it in his stride.

The porches, the ornate entrance, the churches-

The architecture of all are remnants of colonisation.

The memory of pain and torture comes back to haunt the patriots

But then it’s time to forgive the past in this age of globalisation.
