Value of DNA Evidence

Value DNA as Evidence

DNA Evidence

DNA evidence is a very helpful tool when solving any investigation. No two people have the same DNA. When DNA evidence is picked up from a crime scene, the DNA can be linked to a crime suspect.

Evidence Collection

Evidence collection is a very tedious task. Every piece of evidence collected has a specific way it must be collected. For example, when collecting saliva as evidence it must be placed on a sterile gauze pad, be dried out, and placed in a paper container. With every piece of evidence collected, there is a specific procedure you must follow when collecting it.

Contamination & Preservation Issues

Contamination & Preservation Issues

If evidence is not collected properly it cannot be used in court. It is very important to avoid contamination of the evidence. Ways to avoid contamination include: wearing gloves, avoid coughing near evidence, and put evidence in paper bags and envelopes.

DNA Testing

DNA is very helpful in the forensics field. DNA testing is when a scientist looks into the collected evidence to identify DNA. When they find DNA on a piece of evidence it makes the forensic scientists closer to solving a crime. The Burea of Criminal Apprhension states ,"The DNA testing process is comprised of four main steps, including extraction, quantitation, amplification, and capillary electrophoresis."

Interpreting DNA Test Results

When you find a DNA match from the crime scene that does not necessarially mean you have found the criminal. There are many more factora played into it. There is a multi-step process in analyzing DNA , those steps include: 1.isolating the DNA from the evidence sample 2. processing of the DNA 3.determining the variations in the DNA test results 4.compare and interprete the test results from the samples. By using the analization process you will be able to determine who was at the crime scene.
