Subtropical Desert Biome

Map of Subtropical Deserts

Map

Climate

In subtropcial deserts the temperatures are high, there is limited amounts of precipitation and lots of wind. Temperatures are normally between 84 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit during the summer and 59 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit during winter. Wind speeds can get up to 50 miles per hour. Precipitation doesn't normally go over 12 inches per year with most of the rain happening from July and September.

Latitude

Subtropical deserts usually occur between 15° and 30° latitude.

Altitude

Attitude is between 2400 meters to 6000 meters.

Abiotic Factors in the Desert

Abiotic Factors

  • Low precipitation
  • Dry air
  • Continusously hot temperatures
  • Limited soil
  • High winds
  • Limited water

Relative primary productivity level

Primary Productivity

  • Relative primary productivity level in a desert is 70 grams per meter squared per year.
  • Major primary producers include Cacti, creisote bushes, thorn Acacias, Annual flowers, Rabbit Brush, Ocotillo, Sage brush.

Human Threats

Human Threats

Human threats to deserts and threats humans have contributed to include, global warming, gold mining, off road vehicles, oil and gas production, and nuclear waste.

Ecosystem Services + harm

Ecosystem Services

+ Harm

-Humans use deserts to mine for gold and as a dump for nuclear waste. The negative effect of gold mining and dumping nuclear waste is that it’s poisonous to the wildlife. Gold mining is poisonous to wildlife when potassium cyanide is used.

Human Threats

More About Human Threats

Off road vehicles can cause permanent damage to habitats

-Sensitive habitats can be disterbed by oil and gas production pollution.

-Global warming increases wildfires and droughts. Wildfires in deserts change the landscape. When shrubs and slow growing trees burn down, fast growing grass replace them. Droughts in deserts dry up water holes that were used by organisms living there. While global warming isn’t just from the productivity of humans, greenhouse gasses created by human activities contribute to global warming.
