Horatio Movie vs Play

In the play Hamlet, written by William Shakespeare, Horatio addresses the ghost in the opening scene. Horatio's voice and choice of words indicate his distrust and show signs of disrespect towards the spirit when he yells "by heaven, [he] charge thee speak" (1.1.54). He harshly attempts to determine the ghost's purpose and displays signs of discomfort in the position of an academic.

Actor Kate Winslet brilliantly portrays her role as Ophelia, a naive woman who obediently listens to her father's commands despite the damage that does to her. Ophelia's brother and father express the dangers of giving up her purity. To honour her father's wishes, she plays along with the plan to prove Hamlet is mad which results in her madness as"...poor Ophelia Divided from herself and her fair judgment, Without the which we are pictures or mere beasts" (4.5.91-93). Going against her desire to be with Hamlet, the circumstances lead to Ophelia's death.

Though it is not clear what characteristics Claudius carries for him to murder his brother and marry his wife, a reason for his actions is due to him not seeing the love King Hamlet expressed for his wife and family.
