There are many different playwrights, but in this presentation are just a few.
Introduction
Aristophanes
Aristophanes
- Most famous for comedies.
- Born in 440 B.C.
- Most of his plays comment on the long war.
- He often made fun of tragedies.
- Before he died in 280 B.C., he had written 44 comedies.
The Plays He Wrote
Aristophanes wrote 44 comedies of which we only have 11 today.
His first three were:
- “The Acharnians”
- “The Knights”
- “The Clouds”
His Plays
Aeschylus
- The first great tragedian.
- Born around 525 B.C.
- First started writing around 498 B.C.
- Famous for his trilogy, Oresteia.
- Fought in the Battle at Marathon.
- He was considered difficult and old-fashioned.
- But he put great effort into his plays.
- He wrote 89 plays.
- Died sometime after 458 B.C.

Some of the plays he wrote were:
- Parts 1-3 of The Oresteia,
- Seven Against Thebes
- and The Suppliants
