Triple Aim

by Imon Allen

Introduction

In 2007, the Institute for Health Improvement launched the Triple Aim, which focused on the three goals of patient satisfaction, improving public health, and reducing healthcare costs.

Triple Aim seeks to provide a framework that explicitly outlines the ongoing quality improvement efforts that providers should take to achieve consistent and high-quality care.

History

Improving the Patient Experience of Care

Aim 1

Improving the Health of Populations

Aim 2

Hospitals have historically had less responsibility for influencing the overall health status of the population of patients they serve. However, that is changing as hospitals and health systems reach out to their communities in new ways.

Hospitals are conducting community health assessments every three years and are developing and implementing plans to address identified needs.

Reducing the Per Capita Cost of Health Care

All of the aforementioned progress that hospitals have made in preventing HACs directly translates into cost savings for patients, insurers and government programs.
