Definition

What is a Historical Qualitative Research?

It is the process of examining primary documents and investigating past events systematically to help understand the connection of past events to the present, to provide an account of happenings in the past, and to anticipate potential effects on the future.

Something that makes it different from other types of research is the Scope. This refers to the number of years covered, the kind of events focused on, and the extent of new knowledge or discoveries resulting from the historical path

Identify a researchable phenomenon.

This involves reading relevant literature, listening to current views about the phenomenon and reflecting on the researcher’s interest before choosing a specific time period, person, phenomena or era related to

the focus of the study.

Develop a hypotheses or research questions and identify a theoretical perspective.

This will guide the process of data collection and results interpretation besides helping the researcher focus and interpret historical occurrences as recorded.

This is the process of gathering and measuring information on variables of interest, in an established systematic fashion that enables one to answer stated research questions, test hypotheses, and evaluate outcomes.

Primary sources are first-person accounts that involve the oral or written testimony of eyewitnesses while secondary sources are account descriptions of people who are not eyewitnesses of the event or did not personally know the person being studied.

Evaluate the validity and reliability of data.

The researcher will evaluate the data and form generalizations to either accept or reject hypotheses, to answer research questions and form conclusions.
