National Honor Society?

What is the National Honor Society?

  • A nationwide organization founded in 1921 for high school students who are selected to become members based on four criteria : scholarship, leadership, service, and character.

  • Being a member of NHS not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.

Why should students apply to become

Officer Positions

  • President

Leads the club, sets agendas for the meetings, coordinates work, and has the student responsibility for the functioning of the entire chapter.

  • Vice President

Fulfills the duties of president as circumstances require, and partakes in the planning of events.

  • Secretary

Takes minutes of all meetings, maintains all electronic records, and keeps track of roster.

  • Treasurer

Develops and maintas all financial records.

  • Historian

Updates the NHS calendar of event and manages the submission of photos by members as part of their service requirement.

  • Parlimentarian

Checks mandatory attendance and keeps accurate electronic records of community service hours.

What are the requirements?

*Must be a junior or senior*

  • Scholarship

(GPA of over 3.5)

  • Character

(Being an exemplary behavioral example in the classroom, demonstrate good decision making)

  • Service

(Commitment to the community through service projects and volunteering)

  • Leadership

(Take on a leadership roles in various extracurricular activities both in and outside the classroom)

What are the expectations?

All members are expected to :

  • Attend weekly meetings

  • Maintain their GPA of 3.5 or higher

  • Have at least 10 hours of community service each semester

  • Take part in assigned activities throughout the year

  • Uphold the four pillars of the club – Scholarship, Leadership, Character, Service

Applying

  • You are sent a paper invitation to apply, sometime during the last marking period of your sophomore year if you have a GPA of 3.5 or higher

*This does NOT guarantee acceptance!*

  • It is somewhat time consuming and requires you to gather evidence of why you are a strong candidate

On the application itself :

  • Fill out supplemental information on who you are, including extracurriculars you are involved in.
  • Write an essay that demonstrates that you are aware of and represent the four pillars of NHS : Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character.

Submit your application BEFORE the deadline!

now what?

  • Within a few weeks of applying, data is compiled for each student.

  • The NHS advisor and officers, as well as academic administraters will review ALL applications.

  • All candidates who recieve an application will receive a physical letter during school time informing you of your acceptance.

  • Those that are accepted will be invited to the induction ceremony wearing formal attire.
