Assassination of Ferdinand

The signifigance of this assassination was that it is considered to be what 'sparked' the war. Austria-Hungary, who blamed this on Serbian governnment, wanted to use this attack as a justification for settlling the Slav nationalism once and for all. On July 28th, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia and the peace between Europe's powers were collapsed.

Austria-Hungary Delares War

In July, Austris-Hungary finally, offically declares war on Serbia. During the early years of the war, Russia was stating threats and that caused many troops to start moving in. The peace Europe once had was now in the hands of Kaiser.

Battle of the Marne

The first battle of the Marne was a battle that involved 2 million troops. September 5,1914 the 6th French Army realized a simple mistake Germany made in exposing their right flank. The French and the British then were able to take advantage of the Germans by usage of the Schlieffen Plan.

The Race To the Sea

After the Battle of the Marne, both opposing sides tried to close in the northern flank of the other. They did this until they both eventually reached the Coast of Belgium. Germany was said to 'trench itself' due to both sides digging in and starting the deadly trench warfare. This was located on the Western Front, and continued for the remainder of the war.

Sinking of the RMS Lusitania

The Lusitania was a British liner was traveling from New York to Great Britain, and was filled with families and couples. During this time, Britain was trying to get America involved in the war, and came up with the idea to bring down this enormous ship. After is was struck in the side with a massive torpedo, the U.S. sentiment turned heavily against Germany, causing them to want to join the war.

Unrestricted Submarine Warfare

This unrestricted German submarine warfare caused, according to Wilson, "...a war against all nations." When they had sunk the Lusitania, taking American lives and resources, it struck a fire underneath the U.S. . In the message to congress from Wilson, he is explaining how we need to fight back for our respect, safety, and dignity.

Germany was able to accomplish this through the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk. This treaty forced Russia to surrender and Germany was able to gain land at the same time. Russia was simultaneously undergoing the Russian Revolution and had enough problems as it is, which in turn enabled Germany to send more forces back to the western front to fight the Allies.

This was considered the last major German offense against the opposing fores during the time of the war.

This was the final allied offense that eventually lead to the German surrender. This was also known as the largest battle during World War 1. It was said that 28,000 Germans 26,277 Americans, and an unknown amount of french soldiers lost their lives in what is to be considered the deadliest battle in American History.

Armistice Ends Hostilities

On the 11th month, the 11th day, and the 11th hour, and armistice was signed, finally putting an end to the war. It officially ended the hostilities between the Allies and Germany and was a formal agreement to stop the fighting. According to New York Times, at the time, Berlin had been seized by several revolutionists, they were looking for order, and Kaiser had 'fleed' to Holland.
