Into The Mind Of Iago

Iago Quote 1-2

Honesty Translation

"I am glad of this; for now I shall have reason to show the love and duty that I bear you."

(Act 3, Scene 3.)

Right now I’m going to kiss ass, but later is when I turn on you and make you suffer.

Honesty Translation

”I follow him to serve my turn upon him.

(Act 1, Scene 1.)”

For now I follow Othello to make me look less suspicious. Later I will betray him and show him my true intentions.

Iago Quote 3-4

Honesty Translation

“She did deceive her father, marrying you. (Act 3, Scene 3.)”

Look, If she deceived her father to be with you, she can definitely bamboozle you, which she is doing, to be with Cassio.

Honesty Translation

“And, good lieutenant, I think you think I love you. (Act 2, Scene 3.)”

See lieutenant, I believe that you believe that I'm on your side.

Iago Quote 5-6

Honesty Translation

"Look to your wife. Observe her well, Cassio."

(Act 3, Scene 3.)

Othello, watch your wife carefully, watch for Cassio.

Honesty Translation

"There are ways to recover the general

again."

(Act 2, Scene 3.)

Listen man this loss isn’t the end of the world, let me help you.

Iago Quote 7-8

Honesty Translation

“But for my sport and profit. I hate the Moor,

And it is thought abroad that 'twixt my sheets

He has done my office. I know not if 't be true,

But I, for mere suspicion in that kind,

Will do as if for surety.”

(Act 1,Scene 3)

F**k Othello he is my enemy he slept with my wife and I may not know it is true but let me place the doubt on another.

Honesty Translation

“Oh, they are our friends! But one cup; I’ll drink for you.“

(Act 2, Scene 3)

Just one drink everyone is doing it, just one to let me manipulate you.

Iago Quote 9-10

Honesty Translation

“Go to; farewell! Put money in your purse.”

(Act 1, Scene 3)

Go sell everything to fill my pockets.

Honesty Translation

Let me blame another but not suggest it, just imply it.

"Cassio, my lord? No, sure, I cannot think it, That he would steal away so guiltylike,

Seeing your coming."

(Act 3, Scene 3)

Our Answer:

Discussion Question 1:

Iago is constantly talking about women in derogatory ways, from his joking assessment of women for the amusement of Desdemona in the second act to his put-downs of Emilia to his assumption that Desdemona will probably cheat on Othello eventually. Does the play support Iago's opinion of women, or refute it? Explain.

The play depicts women as objects, used as a man’s stepping stone. This is supported by Cassio’s womanizer personality, Iago’s twisted misogynist point of view and the women in the play don't really have a say in the discussions they rarely take part in.

Discussion Question 2:

With all the references to Othello’s race, what do you think Shakespeare is saying about race? Is he racist?

In the play, Othello it is openly racist passing remarks about Othello’s skin tone and background characters talk about how he is a witch compelling Desdemona with magic since he couldn’t have made her fall in love with him due to the color of his skin. In the case of whether or not Shakespeare is racist, we believe that Shakespeare is aware about the problem that lies in skin color. But we believe that Shakespeare isn’t racist he just displays racism in his pieces.

(Talking about racism and being racist are things completely separate.)

Our Answer:

Family wise, sometimes they can be unaccepting of their child's partner. For example, a white guy dating a black girl can typically go two ways. They will either place many stereotypes on her or think it is normal to say very insulting things to her or they will just not accept her at all because she is black. It is rare if this does not happen in an interracial relationship and everything goes well.

Discussion Question

3:

What struggles do those who marry interracially or inter-culturally face today? Explain.

Our Answer:

Discussion Question 4:

In 1998, Patrick Stewart, a white actor, played the role of Othello surrounded by an all-black cast. Do you think this way of performing Othello would be effective? Would it substantially change any of the themes or dynamics of the play? Which ones?

I think that performing Othello like that takes away from the underlying message that is presented in the play and doesn’t give the same impact as having a black person play Othello. The message and the themes won’t have that emphasis on racial inequality. An example of this is how Iago a white man, ultimately corrupts and destroys the life of Othello a black man.

Our Answer:

Discussion Question 5:

Compare Iago with other villains from stories you have read or movies you have seen. How does Iago rate on the wicked scale?

We believe that Iago is not the stereotypical villain he lurks and waits until his poison seeps into his victims. We think that he is actually one of the worst villains for the fact that he did everything he did in the play for his own benefit and greed. He instills psychological pain which has a more lasting mark on his victims. In rating terms we believe that he is a 8/10 on that scale going up against The Joker levels of psychological pain.
