Figurative Language

F

Examples of figurative language from the book Restart by Gordon Korman.

E

"All the anger that's been building inside me since Joel left for Melton rises to the surface like magma. " (Korman 19)

Shoshanna's thought is an example of a simile because she is comparing two unlike things with the word like, in this case she is comparing her anger to magma. The author's word choice enhances the text because it give us a visual about how the character is feeling and gives us an idea about how angry she is.

"Bear snatches the pass out of the air, hugs the ball close to his body, and executes a lightning spin move around a lady pushing a baby carriage on the sidewalk." (Korman 111)

D

This is an example of a hyperbole because no one can actually spin at the speed of lightning. The author uses this type of figurative language to illustrate how fast Bear is moving.

C

"The longer we sit, the darker his mood gets, blackening and lowering until it hangs over him like a line of thunderheads." (Korman 63)

This is an example of a simile because the author is comparing Chase's dad to a thunder cloud, which are two very unlike things. The author uses this figurative language to give us a visual of how threatening and ominous Chase's dad can look. This figurative language also shows us how Chase can be scared of his own father.

B

"Those two gorillas could really dismantle him." (Korman 222)

This is an example of a metaphor because Shoshanna is comparing Bear and Aaron to gorillas without using the word like or as. This figurative language shows us that Aaron and Bear can be frightening and powerful, just like gorillas.

"The notes flow like a river- speeding up, slowing down, changing in tone and texture. It's almost as if the piano is singing." (Korman 149)

A

This example includes two different types of figurative language. The first example is a simile because Chase is comparing piano notes to a river using the word like. This simile shows how the piano keys sound peaceful and easily drift in the song. The other type of figurative language is personification because Chase is describing the piano with human qualities. This personification enhances the text by giving us an idea about how good the song is.

"When the hand grasped my shoulder, I practically jumped out of my skin, scaring poor Brendan half way back to the breakfast line in the cafeteria." (Korman 145)

A

This is an example of a hyperbole because it is exaggerating how far Brendan jumped back in shock. This figurative language enhances the text because it gives us an idea about how scared Brandon was.
