Kendrick Lamar released his debut mixtape “Youngest Head N**** in Charge (Hub City Threat: Minor of the Year) under the alias “K-Dot”. The album became very popular in underground rap and even caught the attention of major entertainment companies such as Top Dawg Entertainmen. Lamar ultimately took a record deal with Top Dawg Entertainment, where he was able to work closely with respected rappers such as Jay Rock, Ab-soul, and Schoolboy Q.

Trayvon Martin, an unarmed 17 year old boy, was unjustly shot and killed by George Zimmerman in Stanford, Florida. This caused an outcry throughout all Black communities. Protests went on and called for the prosecution of Zimmerman. Black people all over America felt targeted. However, in a turn of events, Zimmerman was acquitted on the basis of self defence. This event greatly impacted Lamar's work and even mention Martin in his song "The Blacker the Berry" with the soul searching line "So why did I weep when Trayvon Martin was in the street".

This album helped boost Kendrick Lamar’s career through songs such as “Swimming Pools” and “Poetic Justice”. Lamar’s large fan based was established. Lamar addressed faults in American society and government and showcased his black pride. Songs such as “The Blacker the Berry” and “Alright” addressed the oppression of Black people all throughout America and the unjust killing of Trayvon Martin. Lamar was nominated for 11 Grammys. In addition to this, Lamar got married to Whitney Alford.
