The Early Hours

The alarm was sounded at 8:04 pm, April 19th, 1904

The Beginning of the Fire

The fire started in a building on Wellington St.

The cause is thought to be faulty wiring or a stove left running

While it was ablaze

Toronto's firefighter's could not contol the blaze themselves, so neighbouring suburbs, as well as Hailton and Buffalo sent troops to help

During The Fire

Fire was deemed "under control" by 4:30 am

Small fires would break out for days after, and the ruins smouldered for another two weeks

The Aftermath

10,000$ (341,000$ today) was lost as a result

After the Fire

No major casualties, only minor injuries were suffered

A new by-law was passed for "fire resistant" construction

This inferno is the reason why most (if not all) of Toronto's buildings are built with brick
