1534 Meeting the Mi'kmaq

In 1534 the King Francois 1 sent Jacques Cartier to find a passage through North America to Asia. After 20 days he found the coast of Newfoundland and then entered the gulf of St Lawrence. One day when they were exploring they met a group of Mi'kmaq. In one written account Jacques Cartier wrote "They bartered all they had,to such an extent that all went back naked..."

July 1534 Meeting The Haudenosaunee

Cartier landed at a place he named Gaspe. It was here where he first met the Haudenosaunee and Donnacona who was their leader. The Haudenosaunee had travelled to Gaspe from their home farther up in the St.Lawrence to fish.

When Cartier returned, the brought three ships and 110 men with him. Donnacona's sons were brought back to guide him deeper into the continent and up the St.Lawrence river. Cartier and his crew went as far as Stadacona.

Scurvy

They deciceded to stay the winter and built a small log fort near Stadacona. But since they lacked fresh fruit and vegetables many became ill and died from the disease. The Haudensauneee had cure for Scurvy. The French were taught how to make the tea used to as cure. The tea is made by boiling pieces of white cedar. Cartier and his men probably would not have survived the winter if they did not receive help from the First Nations.

Land of Riches

Cartier was told of a land northeast of Stadacona filled with metals, gems and fruit trees. So in 1536 Donnacona and nine other villagers were taken to Europe so they tell the king about North Americas riches.Cartier was hoping that this would convince the King to fund another expedition across the Atlantic.

1542

In 1542 Cartier retured but with all but one Haudensaunee dead. Cartier told the Haudensaunee lies about how their dead clan memebers enjoyed live in France so much they decided to stay. Historical accounts say that Haudensaunee did bot believe him. So when Cartier attempted to build a colony along the St.Lawrence he and the French were treated with hostilities by the Haudensaunee. Later that year they were faced with an horrendous winter and decided to return to France.
