Ellen's parents got a divorce when she was thirteen years old. From that time on, her mother raised her as a single parent. Ellen and her mother, Betty Degeneres, have a very close relationship. The best seat in the audience in Ellen's talk show is always reserved for her mother. When ellen was young, she oftentimes used humor to help her mother out of depressing times after the divorce. Before she got into comedy, she carried many odd jobs, including a vaccum salesperson!

ellen is an active member of peta, and she her wife, portia, are vegans. Ellen also has her own brand of pet merchandise. Recently, on her 60th birthday, portia gifted ellen with a wildlife fund in her name and a campus to protect gorillas.

As a child, Ellen's parents took her to several open houses, but never had enough money to buy any of the houses they looked at. Therefore, as soon as Ellen had anywhere near enough money, she purchased her own house. Now, she and her wife move frequently, fixing up each house.
