Tungsten carbide balls that make up the tip are usually supplied by outside vendors. To make the tip brass brands are inserted into stamping machines, where they are made into small discs. From the stamping machines, the brass discs are softened and poured into a compression chamber.
After the brass is poured into the compression chamber, the steel ram in the chamber presses on the metal, forcing the spring-backed ejector plunger to retract and making the metal go into the cast mold. They are then compressed into tips, cleaned, cut, and immersed in a bath to remove oils. Lastly, they are polished and the ball is inserted into the point cavity.
The plastic part of the Ink chamber (ink reservoir) is made using extrusion molding. First, plastic granules or powder is put into a large hopper, a large spiral screw forces the plastic through a heated chamber, making a thick liquid, which is then pushed through a dye, cooled, and cut.
The ballpoint tip is attached to the ink reservoir, then the pieces are sent to injectors, where the reservoir is filled with ink and closed.
