The Victorian age is a period of history, important for England. The name derives from queen Victoria. This period lasted from 1837 to 1901 period of colonialism and Belle Epoque.
Queen Alexandrina Victoria was born on the 24th May 1819 in London and she died on the 22nd January 1901 in Cowes.
She was the queen of Ireland, India and UK.The period in which she reigned is called the Victorian age.
She married her cousin, prince Alberto. They had nine children. She ruled for 63 years.
She's very famous for to have brought England to the height of its power.
Social condition
During the Victorian age, the people were divided in 3 different classes.
1. The upper class or nobility class
2. The middle class
3. The working class.
The life,depended from your wealth in money: if you were rich you had a good and buxom life, if you were born poor, you lived in precarious conditions and you often died early. During the Victorian Age, the theater was very popular for everybody: even for the people belonging at the Working Class. The theater became popular also because of the improvement of the roads.
POLITICAL CONDITION
During the Victorian age, Great Britain was a monarchy reigned from Queen Victoria. The monarchy need at government a king, a queen or both. Everyone in the Royal Family had a specific role like prince/princess, duke/duchess. Politics was important to Victorians because they believed in a perfect government. This age had many political movements like socialism and liberalism.
FAMOUS GENRE
The most important genre of Victorian age are Victorian novels. They became famous for the middle class. The culture wasn't only for rich people and, so, everybody knew read books. An Victorian novels tell about the society and its problems. For example an important writer of Victoria novels was Charles Dickens. Also painting was important, for example there are Pre-Raphaelite. Their argument is the mythology.
Charles Dickens was an important writer of the Victorian age.
His stories are short but true and now he is considered a genius.
He was born on the 7th February 1812 in Portsmouth.
His family was rich, but his father was arrested when Charles was 12 years old.
He left school and he worked in a factory.
He became famous after publication of "The Pickwick Papers".
His stories are satirical,humorous and impinge the historical situation and society of England.
His the most famous novella is Oliver Twist. He died on the 9th June 1870.
He was buried in Poet's Corner.
Oliver Twist was a poor boy and orphan because his mother died after he was born. Till nine years old he grew in an orphanage in bad conditions, after nine years old he went to workhouse for adults. One day he ran away to London and he became a chimney sweep. After he joined a group of pickpockets. Oliver was helped by a family in middle class and that family adopted him. After some investigations it turned out that he was noble origins.
The novella tells of Victorian age society.
In that England a lot of children worked, in fact child labor was widespread.
Only 20 percent of the children went to school.
Like Oliver a lot of children were chimney sweeps, because they were very small and so they were perfect for these works.
Adults worked a lot and for many hours.
Life wasn't easy for everybody, in fact a lot of people died.
