Feline Triaditis is unique to cats, and it is the simultaneous inflammation of three different organs, including the pancreas, the liver, and the intestines. Triaditis in cats consists of three concurrent conditions:
1) IBD
2) Pancreatits
3) Cholangitis

Inflammatory
Bowel
Disease
- a condition in which a cat’s small intestine becomes chronically irritated and inflamed
IBD Pathophysiology
Pathophysiology
- Gross
- vomiting
- reduced appetite
- diarrhea
- Cellular
- inflammatory cells infiltrate the walls of the GI tract, thickening them and disrupting the ability of the GI tract to properly digest and absorb food
- most common form of IBD, termed lymphocytic plasmacytic enteritis, involves inflammatory lymphocytes and plasma cells invading the small intestine
IBD Diagnostics
Diagnostics
- infectious disease testing- to screen for feline leukemia virus, feline immunodeficiency virus, toxoplasmosis, feline infectious peritonitis
- fecal testing- to rule out intestinal parasites
- abdominal imaging- to assess inflammation and irregularity of small intestine
- radiographs
- ultrasound
- small intestine biopsy
IBD Treatment
Treatment
- dietary modification- transition to a novel protein or hypoallergenic diet
- antibiotic therapy- such as tylosin, metronidazole, or amoxicillin
- anti-inflammatory therapy- such as prednisolone
- vitamin supplementation- B12 injections
a
Pancreatitis
- inflammation of the pancreas that causes pancreatic enzymes to be activated prematurely
- this causes damage to the pancreas itself
Pathophysiology
Pathophysiology
Gross:
- vomiting is seen in only half of cats
- mentation - not bright
- dehydration
- loss of appetite
Cellular Level:
- appears to occur spontaneously, but can be secondary to other diseases
- early activation of the pancreatic enzymes causes damage to the cells
Diagnosis
- gastrointestinal profile
- to assess pancreatic function
- feline pancreas-specific lipase (Spec-fPLI) offered by IDEXX Laboratories
- to assess pancreatic function
- radiographs and ultrasound
- to assess size and structure of the organ
Cholangitis Pathophysiology
