The series is a loose adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s work on private detective Sherlock Holmes and his partner, Dr John Watson. The action is moved from the 19th century to the 21st century; consulting detective Sherlock Holmes, looking for a roommate, with the help of his companion, meets John Watson, a military doctor who has returned from Afghanistan. They settle at 221 B Baker Street with the elderly mistress Mrs Hudson. Together, Sherlock and John assist Scotland Yard in solving complex cases using surveillance, analysis, deduction, and modern technology such as the Internet and mobile phones.

1. Benedict Cumberbatch’s parents play Sherlock Holmes' parents. They appeared in the first episode of the third season at Sherlock’s apartment for tea.
2. Each season was planned to consist of 6 episodes (instead of 3) of 60 minutes each (instead of 90).
3. Benedict Cumberbatch is remotely related to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the author of the original Sherlock Holmes books. These are the sixteenth cousins, twice removed, and their common ancestor is John of Gaunt.
4. At the end of the fourth season, Sherlock and Watson leave the building called «Rathbone Place». This is a reference to one of Sherlock Holmes' most famous incarnations, played by Basil Rathbone.
5. Perhaps «Sherlock» will become the basis for the creation of a thematic amusement park.
6. Adapting the adaptation, the Japanese magazine «Young Ace» in 2012 released the first episode of «Sherlock» in the original artistic style of this country. American publisher «Titan Comics» recently published four Japanese issues in a single paperback edition.
