Divergent is the first book about a dystopian world where everyone is divided into five factions based on personalities.
The story is about Beatrice Prior and her journey to find her own path in her world.
Beatrice was born into Abnegation, all citizens, once they reach 16, take a test to determine the best place for them and then they must decide which faction they want to join. Beatrice is faced with a choice. Most of kids stick with their orginal factions, but feel drawn to a different faction from their parents and friends. They are forced to leave behind their past life - which means friends, family, and morals.
The autor's purpose to entertain the reader and to see things out side of the box. To make you think how the world would be if everbody were placed into factions. How it would feel to not be able to be in control or be defined by only one thing. The author challenges that type of thinking by saying that people are made up of a lot of different personalities.
The author's style in Divegent is very good word choices. She is very good at writing her book. She writes where people can understand what she is saying easily. She adds lots of details to paint a picture in your mind, but gets down to the point. She doesn't drag on about one thing. She keeps the book moving and the reader wanting to read.
There are many diffences from the book and the movie.
Some of them are little things that you could miss easily but others are very obvious that it is different than the book.
School
In the book: All of the kids went to school.
In the movie: They kids did not go to school.
Jeanine
In the book: Jeanine is the Erudite leader responsible for spreading rumors that are not true about Abnegation. Tris doesn't come face-to-face with her until halfway through the book. She is also described as wearing glasses that she doesn't need in the book. She wears them because she wants to look smart.
In the movie: Tris encounters Jeanine on choosing day. Jeanine's role is bigger in the movie. Jeanine doesn't wear glasses in the movie either.
New Tattoo Technology
In the book: Tris said something about there being extra needles around the tattoo shop.
In the movie: Tori gives Tris her bird tattoo by laying a pad over her skin that applies a pre-programmed design.
The Chasm
In the book: The chasm in dauntless drops into a large body of water. When Christina concedes in a fight, Eric makes her hang on to the railing for 5 minutes. The water makes this more hard for her to hang on.
In the movie: There is no railing or water in this scene. Eric only make Christina hold on for less than a minute.
The Ferris Wheel
In the book: Tris almost falls coming down an is left haning by her finger tips. Four goes down to the bottom of the ferris wheel and activates it to lower Tris to the ground.
In the movie: Tris falls on the way climbing up the ferris wheel because of a loose rung in the lader. Four cathes her.
Four Is Not Alone
In the book: Only Four is garding the computers in his mind controled state, and he is running the program that is controlling the other dauntless. Also Four is the one to shut down the simulation after he is freed from his mind control state from Tris.
In the movie: Four is not the one controlling the program Jeanine is. Tris frees him from the program by repeating "Four it's me, it's me". After Four is free from being mind controlled, he helps Tris fight off the guards and put Jeanine under her own mind controlling program to make her stop the program.
There is not as many similarities as there are differences, but there are still some.
In both the book and the movie Tris has never had a hamburger before.
Four and Tris fall in love with each other in both the book and the movie.
Al kills himself in both the book and the movie.
In both the book and the movie both of Tris's parents die.
In both the book and the movie Four protects Tris and helps her hide being divergent.
At the end in both the book and the movie; Four, Tris, Tris's brother Caleb, and Marcus are running to get onto a train. Four helps Tris onto the train.
There are a lot of differences in the characters looks from the book to the movie.
All of the main characters are around 16 years old in the book, but in the movie they look older to me. There are also diffences in their physical appearence from the book to the movie.
Small changes like hair type/style and color.
To more drastic changes like body build.
I guess that you can't cast every character exactly like they are described in the book though.
The theme of Divegent is that no matter who you are, you can do anything that you want to do with support and determination.
The tone of the book is anxious, dangerous, and mysterious.
When the story begins, the faction world has seen many years of peace.
At first, all seems well, but you can somehow tell that there is trouble coming.
The author takes an anxious tone that keeps me wondering what is going to happen next.
The tone of the movie is suspensiveful.
In the beginning Tris is very nervous about choosing day, she struggles with herself and what decision she will make. When she decides to change factions and join Dauntless, she is very unsure about the initiation process. After being in Dauntless for awhile she becomes more confident in her abillites. She finally begins to show more brave characteristics and takes more risk. The movie keeps you on the edge of your seat. You want Tris to make it. You also do not want her or Four to get caught for being Divergent.
