- Cabot became a citizen of Venice in 1461and in 1482 he married a Venetian woman, Mattea. They had three sons
- fact: From 1508 to 1509 Cabot's son Sebastiano carried out explorations of his own
- after he married a Venetian woman they had three sons: Ludovico,Sebastiano and Sancio. The family eventually settled in the English port of Bristol where Cabot was living when he received his commission from King Henry VII.
Who was he
He was born Giovanni Caboto and came from Italy. While he’s known as Giovanni in Italy today, he called himself ‘Zuan’. That is the Venetian form of John, which, despite the spelling, is pronounced a bit like a cross between Jean and Juan (the French and Spanish forms of ‘John’).
He was then working for the English King, Henry VII, having been authorized to seek out the new world to "discover and find whatsoever isles, countries, regions or provinces of heathens and infidels."

- cool fact: even though he lived in england he was still a citizen of venice. He also engaged in eastern trade and that encouraged the fact of his later explorations.
- John Cabot then hoped to sail to the New world and hope to possibly trad and return with goods. His voyages to North America in 1497 and 1498 helped lay the groundwork for Britain's later claim to Canada. It was during a voyage to the Americas in 1499 that John Cabot was lost at sea.
