ASTRONOMY 2022

Decolonizing Science Through a Holistic Lens

Serena M. Katelyn P. Keenen Q.

Our Origins

Our Territories

- While doing this project, it's important to acknowledge and share where we come from

- We wanted to position ourselves while participating in this project

- This helped us be able to bring many worldviews and perspectives to a subject such as indigenous astronomy that means many things to many people

Artistic Creations of Constellations

Our art pieces are able to bring arts and the humanities and science together through creative expression

These pieces and other Indigenous art being used in science create of a perception of the night sky through a decolonial lens

This is where the possibilities between art and science are endless and leave much room for future endeavors

Poetry

Poem #1

Seasons of the Stars

Spring

new light and new life,

welcome the third sugar moon,

Earth slit by sun’s knife.

Summer

youth search in the light,

long journey, long memory;

Fisher’s famous flight.

Autumn

Sage smokes and leaves fall;

Harvest moon greets the spirits,

from the West they call.

Winter

rest, relax, reflect,

breathe brief but endless wisdom;

the Dead will protect.

Poem #2

Elements of the Universe

Earth

protection from birth,

Grandmother Moon watches over

us and Mother Earth.

Water

all life comes from one,

flowing through us and our world,

guided by the Sun.

Fire

Grandfather warms all

eight sons and daughters to wane

eternal nightfall.

Air

unknown in the fray,

Creator linked the Skyworld

with our Milky Way.

Why We Need this in Our Education

- allowing for new worldviews in the world of academia

- decentralize western and eurocentric views
