The Plot

When Emma was 11, she saw an image of a cellist in a concert advertisement, and due to this strange attraction to him Emma decided to go to his concert, and this sparks Emma's interest in classical music

Cello

Lessons

Cello

Though Emma's memory about that first concert she attended had already become hazy, she went on to take cello lessons, and even once performed on the same stage that particular cellist had played on before.

His Latest Performance

Emma got into a prestigious university in New York, and she got a chance to see that cellist's latest performance, yet she found it hard to appreciate the sounds the cellist made with his cello, which was played in a traditional asian style, not a western classical style.

Homesickness

The story ends off with a note of nostalgia, as Emma realizes after the concert how far she is from her homeland.

About the Author

She is the yougest children amongst her and her 2 siblings and is married. Currently, she is living with her 2 cats and her husband. She has a master's degree thanks to being funded with living expenses and full tuition by the Singapore's Arts Council.(something she is grateful for) Moreover the fact 'City in the c minor" was published for a O'level Literature is a great honour to her as the stories she studied when she was

that age were deeply etched in her

mind. According to her biography, she is also unable to parallel park. and she places great emphasis that it is not due to hr gender.

Setting

Most the story takes places during Emma's childhood till her university day. It begns with it being her pre-teens on the bus as well as at the Vitoria Concert Hall.

Later, it changes to being the later years in Emma's life as she grows older while still being in a concert hall setting.

Afterwards, the story proceeds to be taken place as Emma is a student studying under a cellist teacher.

later, the location of the story changes from being in Singapore to it being New York City, America. This is when the protagonist is a young. By the end of the story, the protagonist is walking down the streets of New York.

Afterwards, the story proceeds to be taken place as Em...

character

There are a few characters introduced in this story however, the story focuses on a girl name Emma and how a famous cellist inspired her to lead the life she has lead. This also involves how her father played a role in helping Emma.

Emma

The protagonist of the story, she is the central character to the plot as the stoy revolves. She is a dilligent girl as evident in her being good at her academics as well as her spending a lot of time practising her cello. She is also a very shown to have a lot of passion for music. This can be seen as she would often go watch concerts, escpecially concerts that have her favourite cellist. She is also shown to be independednt as she is living alonein new york city but the final scene with her also shows how much she loves her homecountry.

Uncle lee

He is the father of the main protagonist, Emma and a loving father to her. This is evidence as how he is willing to spend more to buy her cello as well as hiring a music teacher to teach her how to play the musical instruments. Furthermore, he also shows his love by willing to accompamy Emma to concerts despite disliking the concerts. Moreover, he is also shown to be a good parent as he has been raising Emma as a single father and try his best to give her what she wants.

Uncle lee

Cellist she admires

The cellist she admires is a famous world class cellist and has been active for many years. Although he does not appear much in the story or have much characterisation to him, he is constantly reference as a character to be compared to Emma. The difference between the cellist and Emma is their views of their home. For Emma, home is still something she treasures as seen in theending of the story.Whereas the cellist has long forgottten the longingness he has for his homecountry due to frequently ravelling overseas.

Themes

There several reaccuring themes present in the story. Firstly, it talks about the feeling of belonging as seen in the comparision between the famous cellist as well as Emma. While the cellist travelled around the world, the felt no sense of belonging to the places he travel or his home whereas Emma did ended feeling homesick after spending some time away from home.

Another reccuring theme is that through the usage of the different types of music to represent the different moods different characters are feeling. Moreover, it shows the different changes made by the impact the cellist, learning the cello has impacted her life. This shows how music has a direct link to life and how music here, is protrayed as a sourcs of life or a way to express life.

Another reccuring theme is that through t...

Anything that strikes you

One thing that struck me was the fact that even though Emma was initially drawn to the cellist because he was Chinese, she immersed herself with Western classical music. In fact, she could not admire the piece of music the cellist played with a style heavily influenced by chinese traditional music. This shows that even though Emma is Asian, she was still heavily influenced by the Western culture.

Anything that strikes you

it amuses me that...

the asian cellist assigns different keys to different cities, and base them on how he feels about that particular place.

it amuses me that...

Why do you think the story was written?

I think that the story was written to depict the sentiments of being away from one's homeland, no matter how far or long we've not been to that place. It is also depicts how the way the western views society as well as asians view on tare very different due to cultural differences.

Literary devices

There are many literary devices used in the story, for example similies. Examples of a similie found in the story is, " like a stalacitte to the underside of the globe" or "her fingers vibrated on the neck of the cello like flowers petals under the weight of raindrops"

Another literary device is used whe the author compares the sounds produced by the crowds at a concert to that of musical notes.
