Released on the 23rd of May, 2019, the film '2040' is an Australian documentary directed by Damon Gameau about the effects of climate change, in the style of a letter to his four year old daughter.
In the film, Damon is worried about his daughter's future and the state of the environment in 2040. As a result of this, Damon Gameau travels around the world to search for new solutions to climate change, meeting innovators in different areas such as agriculture and sustainability.
Damon and his family
The film 2040 is mainly participatory because it features lots of interviews and the filmmaker is often featured on camera interacting with his subjects, which is his family and other innovators. It is also expository because it has archival footage, narration, seeks a truth and addresses the viewer. 2040 is slightly performative as the filmmaker plays a huge role in the film as the protagonist.
Damon Gameau created the film to raise awareness about climate change but with a different approach that is more hopeful than other climate change films. He also created 2040 to inspire others to solve climate change and protect our planet for future generations to come.
Some of the documentary techniques used in the film are interviews, non-diegetic sounds and persuasive techniques. All of these techniques occured often in the film and influenced the film in various ways.
Interviews are one of the most common documentary techniques in this film, along with non-diegetic sound. Interviews play a big role in the film because it makes viewers empathise with the filmmaker and understand his point of view. He interviews both children and experts with different questions related to climate change to give viewers more understanding to how climate change affects people and what we can do about it.
Non-diegetic sounds are sounds only the audience can hear and includes commentary and music. Non-diegetic sounds are also very common in the film and have the effect of evoking thought and emotions, as well as further setting the mood in certain scenes.
Ethos
Multiple persuasive techniques, such as ethos, pathos and logos are used in the film 2040. Logos supports the filmmaker's perspective by providing statistics and evidence of climate change, ethos is shown when experts and children are being interviewed in the film and pathos is shown when Damon talks about his daughter. These not only engage viewers, but also support his point of view and emphasises the message of the film.
I believe 2040 is one of the best documentaries about climate change not just because of the solutions to climate change, but also how climate change is addressed. I found the film very engaging and I especially like his approach to climate change because he raises awareness and pushes people to take action against climate change while also being optimistic and realistic. I also find it unique how he breaks away from some of the typical documentary conventions and films the documentary in the style of a letter to his daughter to explain the impacts of climate change and how we need to take action while we still can. Personally, I don't think there is anything I particularly dislike about the film at all.
In my opinion, I think everyone should watch this film because the film is very inspiring and climate change is a very important issue that affects all of us. I believe we can still do something about it, no matter our age and generation.
