The three main chemical weapons used in WWI were.....

Introduction

Chlorine

Chlorine

  • used on April 22, 1915
  • makes a chartreuse color
  • symptoms usually include coughing and eye irritation
  • high doses can result in death by asphyxiation (inability to breath)

Mustard Gas

Mustard Gas

  • causes blistering
  • potent scent, like garlic or rubber
  • symptoms aren't immediately noticeable, but slowly blisters appear and can be infected
  • usually resulted in injuries more than deaths

Phosgene

Phosgene

  • smells like mold
  • colorless, which makes it harder to detect
  • 6 times as irritating as chlorine
  • responsible for 85 % of the WWI deaths by chemicals
  • no immediate effects, death occurs about 2 days later

on April 22, 1915 the Germans surprise the Allies with chlorine

In 1917 the Germans now introduce Mustard Gas and pollute many trenches

Uses

the opposing sides would use these gases in order to not only kill of people on the battle field, but to also harm them so that they could be "infected" and would be caused discomfort or later ob death after the battle.
