Beowulf Symbolism Project

By: Camie McLeod

Beowulf

Good and Evil/Heaven and Hell

Christianity

-Grendel's cave can be viewed as a symbol of Hell.

- The theme of good triumphing over evil is strong throughout the story of Beowulf. As one of the faces of evil, in the story, Grendel's cave is a place of loneliness, separation and torment.

- The cave is the home of outcasts, Grendel and his mother, isolated from others.

Grendel's Claw

Grendel's Claw

-Grendel's claw is a symbol of Beowulf's victory and strength.

-After Beowulf rips the arm off of the beast, it is hung beneath Herorot's roof highlighting Beowulf's strength and his enemies defeat.

The Dragon

The Dragon

-The terrifying dragon symbolizes greed, as he hoards treasure and riches in his cave.

-The treasure from his cave is old and decaying though, never having been used to bring enjoyment, only stashed away and unused.

Herorot's Hall

-The great hall, is a symbol of safety, security, happiness, and community.

-In the beginning, before Grendel's reign of terror, the hall was a place of feasting and celebration. It symbolized security where one could settle for the night, unafraid.

Heorots Hall

David and Goliath

David and Goliath

-Beowulf contains elements similar to that of David and Goliath.

-Beowulf accepts the challenge of facing an enemy everyone else is afraid of.

-In defeating Grendel, Beowulf shows courage and determination to overcome seemingly insurmountable odds and defeat a much larger and stronger foe, just like David when he slew the Philistine Goliath.

Grendel's cave

Grendel's Cave

-Grendel's cave represents the loneliness and desolation of Grendel and his mother who were ostracized by society.

-Their not being accepted is a result of their appearance and evil, violent natures, - The cave clearly highlights a separation between them and the rest of the civilians.
