Philippa Foot was a philosopher born October 3, 1920, and was raised in England with no formal childhood education. This was a sign of the times, and as Foot would put it, "the sort of milieu where there was a lot of hunting, shooting, and fishing, and where girls simply did not go to college" (Hacker-Wright)
Despite the trials for women in the age of Foot's youth, she was able to charge through and achieve. She resided in England with her father (an Englishman) and mother (daughter of Grover Cleveland). I believe this nationality difference between parents affected Foot's life path quite a bit and allowed her to step into certain pathways not typically followed.
A young Foot at her educational institution
Foot was recognized for her collegiate research on Immanuel Kant, and she was later invited back to Somerville as a researcher. She remained there on a teaching fellowship for years.
Foot may have researched Kantian philosophy a great deal, but she is known today for her work with contemporary virtue ethics.
