In 1947 the Mau Mau rebel movement began.
In 1952 due to the Mau Mau rebellion the government declared a state of emergency which lasted eight years.
Jomo Kenyatta was sentenced to seven years in jail in 1953 for leading the Mau Mau rebellion.
