SOCIAL CLASSES OF THE HAN DYNASTY

By:Hasina and Kawtar

UPPER CLASS

The highest social class of the Han dynasty was the Emperor. The Emperor peformed the most important religious rituals in the calender, whch included sacrifices at their sacred mountains and river sites. He was in charge of taxes and the people. He had to make sure people were living in order and goodness.

ABOUT THE EMPEROR HAN

EMPEROR HAN

Emperor Han Wudi, originally named Liu Che was born in 156 BC and died march 29 87 BC, liu che was probably the 11th son of the jingdi emperor, the fifth ruler of the han dynasty. he acsended the throne at age 15 and reigned from 141 BC to 86 BC. He carried out a serious of reforms and devoted himself to millitary conquests and teritorial expansion. He drove many other empires that were against the Han and kept his empire standing.

MIDDLE CLASS

Middle class

The middle class of the Han dynasty was made up of the governers and nobles as well as,Scholars, and state officials. These people were all under the hand of the Emperor. They did things like help him with the people and making important decisions. Nobles often became landowners who ruled large estates of lands called fiefs. Since the empire was sectioned into smaller provinces the governers ruled those smaller provinces and reported to the emperor if anything happened. It was basically like how the United states has a President but is split into smaller states that each have a governer.

LOWER CLASS

LOWER CLASS

The lowest class of the Han dynasty was consisted of unskilled laberors such as servants or slaves. There were also soldiers and Merchents placed in the lowest tier. Because Emperor Han thought that the workers that produced deserve to be higher, and since soldiers and merchents didnt produce he felt there was no need for them to be higher. There was also another reason which will be stated in the next slide.

Why were the Peasents higher then the merchents?

Peasents were placed higher in society in the Han dynasty because the Emperor himself, Han Wudi had started out as a peasent. therefore he felt they should be more respected and placed higher on the social classes.Merchents were also placed lower because he didnt think they produced anything whereas peasents like farmer produced food and goods. Even though merchents are usually placed higher in social classes in other Civilizations such as Egypt or Persia, Peasents were more respected in the Han dynsasty.

Why were the Peasents higher then the merchents?
