SC.5.L.14.1

SC.5.L.14.2

Goal

I can define organ, organ system, and tissue.

I can demonstrate the function of the lungs and explain it's role in the respiratory system

Monday

Week Goal:

I can identify the organs in the human body and describe their functions.

Investigation

Observation

Step 1: Place two fingers on your neck, just under your chin and apply a gentle pressure

Step 2: Place your other hand on your stomach, just above your belly button.

Step 3: Stand completely quiet and still... and observe what you feel.

What did you notice?

Vocabulary

Heart Beat

ORGAN

a part of the body with a specific function that allows it to live, move, provide protection, and more

The beat you felt was coming from your heart - an organ!

Your brain, kidneys, and bladder are all organs too.

Do you know what organ is the biggest

organ in your body?

Your Skin!

Vocabulary

Respiratory System

ORGAN SYSTEM

a group of organs that work together to perform a certain function in an organism's body

Your nose, trachea, lungs, and diaphragm work together to help you breath.

They work together to form your respiratory system, in charge of breathing in oxygen, and breathing out waste gasses.

Your body has many organ systems including your circulatory system, nervous system, and skeletal system.

Vocabulary

All Working Together

Cells form different tissues that create organs and organ systems.

The different organs and organ systems work together to carry out all necessary bodily functions.

CELL

the smallest of life that makes up all living organisms and the tissues of the body

TISSUE

a group of cells that have similar structure and that function together as a unit

What is one way your respiratory system interacts with other organ systems?

Experiment

Lab - Model Lungs

Step 1: Read passage on how your body breathes. Annotate the important information. Then watch the video for more clarification.

Step 2: Using only the materials provided, create a design of the respiratory system including the following organs: Throat, Trachea, Lungs.

Step 3: Once your design is approved, bring it to life!

Reflection

Reflection Questions

1. What organs are involved in helping your body breathe?

2. How does oxygen get from your lungs to other parts of your body?

3. Compare and contrast they way humans breathe with the way plants and animals breathe. What are the similarities? What are the differences?

Goal

I can identify the functions of the circulatory, muscular, skeletal, and nervous system.

I can draw conclusions on how different organs an organ systems work together

Tuesday

Week Goal:

I can identify the organs in the human body and describe their functions.

The Business of Balancing

Trial 1 - Stand on one foot and stare at a single point or

THIS DOT ------->

Trial 2 - Stand on one foot and take slow deep breaths

Trial 3 - Stand on one foot and close your eyes

Which one was the easiest to balance? The hardest? Explain.

The Nervous System

Vocabulary

BRAIN

An organ responsible for sending signals that tell your body how to respond, react, or carry out necessary functions like breathing.

NERVES & SPINAL CORD

Organs that transport messages to the brain.

The brain, nerves, spinal cord, and sensory organs work together to in the nervous system.

The nervous system is responsible for transmitting signals between the brain and the rest of the body and keeping our bodies comfortable.

Some nerves carry messages from brain while others carry messages from sensory organs.

What type of messages does the brain respond to keep you balanced on one foot?

Vocabulary

The Muscular and Skeletal System

The muscular system is made up of muscles and tendons and allow us to move

The skeletal system is made up of bones and ligaments that connect our body and provide structure.

MUSCLES

organs that contract, or shorten, and relax, or lengthen to move bones.

BONES

organs made of strong tissue that provide protection and structure to our body.

How do the muscular and skeletal systems help you balance?

The Circulatory System

Vocabulary

How do the circulatory system and respiratory system work together?

HEART

a muscular organ that receives the blood from the veins and pumps it into the arteries

BLOOD

bodily fluid that delives nutrients, oxygen, and hormones to your body

The heart, blood, and blood vessels work together to form the circulatory system.

These organs transport blood, nutrients, and hormones throughout the body.

Arteries are blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart, while veins carry blood to the heart.

Game!

Silent Telephone

1. Teacher asks a question

2. Take a second to think of your answer.

3. Whisper your answer in your teammate's ear.

4. If your teammate agrees, shake hands. If they disagree, “cut”.

- If teammate disagrees, they present their own answer. Students go back and forth until they agree.

5. Teammate will whisper in next teammate's ear and repeat until whole table agrees.

Big Idea 1

Organization of living things

All plants and animals, including humans, are alike in some ways and different in others.

All plants and animals, including humans, have internal parts and external structures that function to keep them alive and help them grow and reproduce.

Humans can better understand the natural world through careful observation.

Activity

Group 1 - Respiratory System

Group 2 - Circulatory System

Group 3 - Nervous System

Group 4 - Muscular System

Group 5 - Skeletal System

Group 6 - Digestive System

1. Use your textbook to research bodily system

2. Draw a diagram of your system including at least three organs

3. Label the organs and their functions

4. Be sure to answer all questions on classkick about your system.

Big Idea 2

Earth is home to a great diversity of living things, but changes in the environment can affect their survival.

Individuals of the same kind often differ in their characteristics and sometimes the differences give individuals an advantage in surviving and reproducing.

Big Idea 3

Plants and animals, including humans, interact with and depend upon each other and their environment to satisfy their basic needs.

Both human activities and natural events can have major impacts on the environment.

Energy flows from the sun through producers to consumers.
