Cons of Animal Testing

Be Humane And Say NO To Animal Testing

Presented by Thomas Sanchez

Reason for Choosing this topic

Reason

This topic interested me because I know that animal testing/experimentation contributes to medecines that we use. I wanted to get a better understanding of what exactly animal teasting is, its intensity, and why its used. After doing some research, I can clearly say that I'm against it.

Evidence

Supporting Evidence

Animal Testing is a very controversial topic. Some people say it benefits humans, and others say that it is abusing animals. Either way, animal testing is a part of our society that has influenced humans for years, but just because we have used it in the past doesn't mean it is right. There are many negatives to animal testing, it is unreliable, expensive, and many animals either die after being tested on or continue to live in poor conditions until they are needed again.

Unreliable Testing

Unreliable

There are many ways in which animal testing is unreliable. One being that although some animals are genetically similar to humans, they are still a different species and thus the result of testing will be different from animal to human. So if a substance is safe for an animal, that doesn't mean it's safe for humans. Another example of unreliable testing is that some of the substances used for testing will or never was planned to be used for human benefit. Those tests were merely just a experiment to see how an animal would react when exposed to a substance. This reduces the reliability of animal testing being used for human benefit.

High Price

Another downside to animal testing is the cost. The animals themselves are a big part of the total cost, especially if they die during the test and need to be replaced. Maintaing and feeding the animals also cost money, even if they are barely given enough to survive. Lastly, the equipment and substance being tested also adds to the total cost. All of this makes the price of animal testing very expensive.

Animal Suffering

Lastly, and arguably the most important reason, animal suffering goes hand in hand with animal testing. During some experiments that will never benefit humans, many animals are exposed to extreme pain such as rabbits or mice being blinded in order to observe their reaction. Many animals won't make it through an experiment, but if they do, they are permanently scarred and either are saved for a later test or killed because they are not needed anymore. Animals don't just suffer during and after testing. They are kept and maintained in poor living conditions before testing. Animals are barely given enough food to survive and in some cases, have died of dehydration. All of this shows that animals suffer the minute they are labeled to be used for testing

Impact of Animal Testing

Impact on Society

Animal testing affects our society in a variety of ways. One example is that beauty and medical products first are tested on animals before being released to the public. Those consumers then indirectly support animal testing facilities by purchasing those products. This cycle ensures that animal testing will continue. Another way animal testing affects society is through its waste disposal. Animal testing facilities can dispose up to 1.5 million pounds of animal bodies, bedding, food waste, and chemicals per year. Most of this waste is disposed by burning. Burning that much material also releases extreme amounts of pollutants into the atmosphere
