Read Aloud

Reading and Annotating for Gist

We are about to read "Time Trip: Sudan's Civil War" Excerpt from: “Life and Death in Darfur: Sudan’s Refugee Crisis Continues,” wirtten in April 7, 2006, This is an informational text that we will use to make important connections with our novel A Long Walk to Water.

To get the most out of today's read aloud, be sure that you are following along in the text and reading the article in your head at the same time. DO NOT BEGIN ANNOTATING WHILE I AM READING

Underline any words that you are unsure of.

Socratic Partners: Getting the Gist

First, Take the next 3 minutes to complete steps 1 and 2 of the Gist Box in your classwork packet Independently. The, when you hear the buzzer, you will have an additional 3 minutes, to turn to your partner, share out your ideas and collaborate on a gist statment.

Annotations

Making Annotations

Great readers make NOETS in the margins when they read. These notes are called ANNOTATIONS and help you keep track of important ideas in the text. When we read in our class novels, we can not make notes in the book so we use POST-ITS.

EVidence Based Annotations

PLease grab a different colored pen than you were using before.

Annotating for Evidence

*ENTRENCHED * GRUELING * HYDRATION *

1. How does Salva's story relate to this article?

2. What does the word Entrenched mean in the text?

3. Who are the Lost boys?

Re-reading, writing, and thinking are all ways to help deepen a person's understanding of the text.

When I say "Go Banana's" you and your partner will re-read the text. Annotating and underlining in the for text based evidence that will help you answer the questions above. Keep the key vocabulary words in your head as you answer questions.

Let's look at an example....

CIVIL WAR -faugt by Muslim Arab north and non-Muslim, Non-Arab South
