This presentation contains 3 of the adaptations that the Adelie penguin went through, maybe all 3 of the adaptations happened to all of the different species of penguin.
Adelie penguins are fiercely protective and will attack any predator that makes its way to a colony. The predators include south polar skuas, large white and brown birds, will frequently try to nibble on penguins. I do like how Adelie look because it kind of reminds me of a tuxedo. The name Adelie comes from the name of an explorer's wife. The Adelie is the smallest breed of penguin, they remind me of minions for some reason.
Pygoscelis adeliae
Heavy, solid bones.
These act like a diver’s weight belt, allowing them to stay underwater.
Keeping cool.
Penguins are able to cool themselves by flushing blood through their flippers and feet. This is why penguin’s feet turn bright pink on warm days. When they are really hot they pant!
I think this is a behavioral adaption because penguins have to send a signal from their brain so they can flush in blood to their flippers and feet.
Strong legs with webbed feet
The legs are set far back on the body to help streamline the bird and steer while swimming. This placement also causes penguins to stand vertically and walk upright.
I think this is a structural adaptation because the structure of the penguin's legs helps the penguin steer since they are set far back on the body.
