Early Years

When Derek was 4 years old his family moved to Kalamazoo,Michigan. His dad,Charles ,a social worker,was going back to college to get another degree. His mom,named Dot like his grandmother,planned to work as an accountant.

The move wasn't easy. At first,Charles and Dot couldn't find a place to live. Landlords wouldn't rent them. Charles was black and Dot was white. Derek's dad had grown up in Alabama with his mother and his 4 sisters. Back then in the South, black people lived in a separate world from white people. It wasn't by choice. It was how white people anted it. They wanted to keep black people apart or segregated.

Middle Years

When Derek was 6, Grandma Dot took him to Yankee Stadium. It looked bigger than anything he'd ever seen. What would it be like to be a Yankee? he wondered. Kalamazoo wasn't far from Detroit and Tiger Stadium. So back home in Michigan, Charles took Derek to see the Yankees play the Tigers. Of course Derek rooted for New York. Charles, though, cheered for the tigers. Growing up, Derek's father had hated the Yankees. The team was one of the last all-white ball clubs.They didn't hire a black player until 1955. That was 8 years before Jackie Robinson broke baseballs color barrier. Derek admired his dad and wanted to be like him. That's why he played shortstop. But he wasn't going to stop rooting for the Yankees. He'd seen them play on TV and in person. And they were just so exciting to watch. Derek had a poster of his favorite player, Dave Winfield, hanging on his bedroom wall. He always wore Yankees jerseys, baseball caps, and jackets.

Later Life

Derek went to the drafts and was waiting for his name to be called and all the other team was skipping Derek and when it was the Yankees turn to pick a player they said "Derek Jeter" and Derek was so happy that his dad Charles came in and was confused and then he knew. Derek did not have money to go to college and the Yankees paid his college for him. He went to his first game and hit his own home run.
