“Policies connected to colonization have created a complex disconnect between a whole generation of young people and their families, young people who are lacking identity, education, and in many cases are suffering from various forms of trauma” (Casaroni, Crol, & Fredricks, 2019; Bania, 2017).
Statistics:
- In 2018 59% of incarcerated were that of indigenous adults
- 30% to provincial/territorial Custody
- 29% to federal custody
- With government policies in place there was a hope that there would be some hope for the indigenous population, however, it seems that the government has also failed with the representation of the Gladue report in some aspects.
- In many cases, indigenous people that are caught up in legal affairs have no idea that the Gladue report is an options, moreover, many also do not know what exactly the Gladue report is. this makes the process of being understood in a court of law way more difficult.
- The funding for such a report is not sufficient, and the government is not exceeding those findings when it should be. In Saskatchewan alone, there is only one Gladue report writer, and they have only wrote a handful; this due to lack of knowledge of the option for a report, and the lack of resources to write more.
Within many police academia courses, there is a commonality that those that are not white are massively being over policed, and hugely under-supported.
