Important Event at Time

''Young and Beautiful'' was written for the soundtrack of the 2013 film, The Great Gatsby, which takes place in the 1920s. The lyrics in each verse parallel directly with the conflicts that Gatsby and Daisy come into contact with. The fear of aging is prominent in the song and in the end, when Lana sings that question as the last line; it mirrors the end of The Great Gatsby, when Gatsby dies not knowing if Daisy will return to him.

Important Event at Time

Verse 1, 2, and Chorus

Verses

The arrangement of the verses describes the development of the persona’s life and relationship, and she is likely to be reminiscing of the past.

Verse 1

I’ve seen the world

Done it all, had my cake now

Diamonds, brilliant, and Bel-Air now

Hot summer nights mid-July

When you and I were forever wild

The crazy days, the city lights

The way you’d play with me like a child

Verse 1

- Suggests that the persona was probably living a rather leisurely and dull life, having “done it all”, maybe with this man she speaks of.

- Suggests that the persona and her lover were riding on a Bel-Air, most likely during summer, enjoying each other’s company.

- The use of the word “cake”, indicates sweetness; like a sweet romance. Also, cake is normally eaten last, and thus it describes their relationship, a sweet finish.

- This verse also makes reference to a crazy, carefree relationship with each other.

- Also says that she was pure and loved to have fun, like a child.

- Suggests that the persona was probably living a rather leisure...

Verse 2

Dear lord when I get to heaven

Please let me bring my man

When he comes tell me that you’ll let him

Father tell me if you can

Verse 2

- Describes how she’s thinking into the future when she dies, asking for God to accept her and her lover in together, so that they will never be separated from each other and be together for eternity. The use of the words makes her sound like she’s begging to be with him forever.

- Shows how she is using every way possible to be with him, even praying to the Gods, how she loves him so much she wants to be with him even in the afterlife.

- Reflects a rather extreme side to her love, in which the reader can feel her extreme dedication to this relationship.

- Describes how she’s thinking into the future when she dies, aski...

Chorus

Will you still love me when I’m no longer young and beautiful

Will you still love me when I got nothing but my aching soul

I know you will, I know you will

I know that you will

Will you still love me when I’m no longer beautiful

Clearly, she is not merely infatuated with the man, but deeply in love with him as she hopes he will be with her, until they’re in their old age. However, along the song, she repeats “[...] I know you will, I know you will [...]”, a way of reassuring herself that the lover would stay by her and to ensure herself that she could be confident in his companionship.

Clearly, she is not merely infatuated with the man, but deeply in lo...
