what does it symbolize: Shaheen
When was it recognized: Mohamed M
Why it is a symbol: Monther
How does it affect the story: Rayan
A symbol in literature, is an object, a person, a situation, or an action that has a literal meaning in a story but suggests or represents other meanings.
Symbolism takes something regular and gives it a deeper and more significant meaning.
It allows the writer to give the reader detailed and complex experiences and creates more meanings and emotions in stories.
Gabriel symbolizes hope, life, and salvation, which is what babies usually symbolize in literature.
Chapter 14 in page 116 in lines 8-22
In those lines it explained what happened the night Jonas transmitted a nice sail boat on a lake without Jonas being aware of it. However, when Jonas realized it was transmitting he stopped with pure will power. After that nice relaxing memory Gabriel felt relaxed and fell asleep
When Gabriel comes into Jonas's life, he gave him hope and made him realize that change is needed. He acts like an archangel coming to help Jonas. If Jonas stayed he would've been released so when Gabriel gave him a sign to leave, it ended up saving him.
Babies frequently figure as symbols of hope and regeneration in literature, and in The Giver this is a good example.
Gabriel is too young to have absorbed the guidelines and rules of the community, so he is still receptive to the memories that Jonas transmits to him. The name Gabriel is a combination of Hebrew words “hero” and “ strong man”
Jonas's Pale eyes symbolize his uniqueness and ability to see beyond, and feel emotions that other people do not have; the ability to perceive.
In Chapter 3 page 21 lines 3-15
In these lines he described the depth of the special eyes he and the newborn child have. He described it as looking into the clear water of the river straight down to the bottom where things might lurk and it hadn't been discovered yet . He had a feeling of self-consciousness and being aware that the new child has that same facial expression
People with pale eyes are different. In the community, they care about sameness. The reason they keep the pale eyes because: in the story, people with pale eyes are known as "knowing eyes" they hold all the memories about the truth of the community.
the pale eyes symbolize separation from the crowd The light eyes symbolize a person's ability to think and see more clearly and deeply.
The bicycle represents freedom and making your own choices
In Chapter 6 page 41, line 23-25
In those lines it said that when the Nines receive the bicycle it is a strong sign of becoming independent and free to be away from their protective families
In the community, they have to do everything the leaders say, they have no opinions of their own and can not make decisions alone. When they get their bicycles, they can go anywhere they want and the cycle helped donas escape and
The bicycles at Nine showed moving gradually out into the community, away from the protective family unit, independence.
the color red, which was the first color That Jonas saw, symbolizes the vital world of feelings and ideas that Jonas discovers.
When was it recognized as a symbol?
In Chapter 12 page 90, lines 25-33
In this lines talks about when Jonas and Fiona were riding together he noticed something with Fiona's hair, just like the apple and the audience. It was the color red. This is the third time he saw something like that change, but it is the first time he acknowledged it is the seeing beyond and that it really important and meaning something. It is the beginning of his training and an adventure.
The author explained the importance of every color but gave red more meaning. Red was shown in the memory of war (the blood) . And Red was the first color he sees after the memory when he sees Fiona's red hair
Instead of adding anything else, the author chooses a hill. Hills have many meanings; the own that connects to the story is the concept of higher and lower levels of land - the higher which can contain: people, darkness, heat, and unpleasantness, life while the lower can suggest isolation, life, death, thin air, and most importantly freedom
the higher land is their community and the truth or elsewhere is the lower bottom of the hill.
another symbol is that a hill is a rocky part of life which jonas crosses to be happy
It was recognized as a symbol when Jonas
he was encountering something he had for a long time
yearned to see: hills. His sprained ankle throbbed as he
forced the pedal downward in an effort that was almost
beyond him.
And the weather was changing. It rained for two days.
Jonas had never seen rain, though he had experienced it
often in the memories. He had liked those rains, enjoyed
the new feeling of it, but this was different. He and Gabriel
became cold and wet, and it was hard to get dry, even when
sunshine occasionally followed.
Gabriel had not cried during the long frightening jour-
ney. Now he did. He cried because he was hungry and cold
and terribly weak. Jonas cried, too, for the same reasons,
and another reason as well. He wept because he was afraid
now that he could not save Gabriel. He no longer cared
about himself.
Jonas's first painful memory was the memory of the slope and sled. In the first memory he was hurt and completely pained. When he escaped, he though he knew what would happened if he sled down and wouldn't get hurt, but he was wrong.
The slope, for Jonas, represents a gateway to Elsewhere. Riding a red sled down the hill is his first memory and his first awareness of the color red. It signifies his realization that outside his community there is a world not dominated by Sameness. And it is where jonas first felt love towards someone other than himslef
