Progressive Era Poster

By: Ricardo Carouthers.

Why Was Poor's Welfare

so important?

The Progressive Era (1890s to 1920s) was a time of significant social and political change in the United States, characterized by reforms aimed at addressing issues such as poverty, inequality, and urbanization. Despite the progress made during this period, the welfare of African Americans, particularly the poor, was still a major concern.

African Americans in the Progressive Era faced significant challenges, including poverty, discrimination, and limited opportunities. Many lived in urban areas and worked in low-paying jobs such as domestic work and manual labor. They also faced challenges accessing education and healthcare, and were often subjected to violence and segregation.

During this time, various progressive reformers attempted to address these issues through policy changes and grassroots organizing. For example, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was founded in 1909 and became a leading advocate for African American rights. Additionally, African American communities often organized themselves to address their own needs, such as establishing mutual aid societies to provide financial support and community services.

Despite these efforts, progress was slow and the welfare of African Americans remained a concern. Segregation and discrimination continued to limit their opportunities and progress was limited by a lack of political power and economic resources.

In conclusion, the Progressive Era was a time of significant social and political change, but the welfare of African American poor remained a major challenge. There are even aftereffects of this horrible situation that shine through to modern day economic issues within the black community.
