The book starts off rather confusing, describing the main character, Maali Almeida in some sort of unnatural waiting room. There are many many wounded and hurt people and a bunch of "helpers" behind desks who tell people what they need to know.
He find out he has died and is in the afterlife. He has 7 moons to figure out how he died, etc. and to find "his light".
In the main part of the book we learn more about Maali's life & the events before and after his death.
Maali was a extreme photographer with many secret vial & corrupt images. We find out that his murdercase corrupt is because of his images.
Maali learns to whisper to the living people & to appear in their dreams. This was he tells his friend about the location of the images.
Eventually the images finally get out to the public in an exhibition. This gives Maali some relief.
He feels way happier now that he had revenge for his murder.
He also finds peace in the fact that his boyfriend DD and friend Jaki are still alive.
At the end he realises that the father of DD killed him because he did not approve of their relationship.
When Maali finally gets to his light he decides to be reincarnated into a helper.
“Mirrors lie as much as memories do.”
- “Evil is not what we should fear. Creatures with power acting in their own interest: that is what should make us shudder.”
- “For atheists there are only moral choices. Accept that we are alone and strive to create heaven on earth. Or accept that no one’s watching and do whatever the hell you like. The latter is by far easier.”
- “The universe is all mathematics and probabilities.”
- “The pupils are in shades of bruises and scabs. Scrambled browns, blues and greens—all of which disregard you. You have lived in refugee camps, visited street markets at noon, and fallen asleep at packed casinos. The heave of humanity is never picturesque. This heave throngs towards you and heaves you away from the counter.”
- “We must all find pointless causes to live for, or why bother with breath?”
- “Magic isn’t evil or good. Or black or white. It is like the universe, like every missing God. Powerful and supremely indifferent.”
- “Even on the sad days, when you have to process young children or those leaving lovers behind, you come to realise that every death is significant, even when every life appears not to be.”
- “Father, forgive them, for I will never.”
- “History is people with ships and weapons wiping out those who forgot to invent them. Every civilisation begins with a genocide. It is the rule of the universe.”
