SCREEN ISN'T LIFE

MADE BY BARBA ROSSELLA, DI MAIO FRANCESCA ROMANA, DONNARUMMA GIULIA

What is screen time?

Something about screen time

Screen time is the amount of time spent using a device with a screen such as a smartphone, computer, television, or video game console. The concept is under significant research with related concepts in digital media use and mental health. Screen time is correlated with mental and physical harm in child development. The positive or negative health effects of screen time are influenced by levels and content of exposure. To prevent harmful exposure to screen time, some governments have placed regulations on its usage

Children and screen time:

How much is too much?

Too much screen time can be linked to:

  • Obesity
  • Irregular sleep
  • Behavioral problems
  • Impaired academic performance
  • Violence
  • Less time for play

What can we do?

In the meantime, here are simple steps to reduce screen time:

  • Eliminate background TV.
  • Keep TVs, smartphones and computers out of the bedroom.
  • Don't eat in front of a screen.

Enviromental effects

ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS

More screen time generally leads to less time spent in nature and therefore a weaker connection to it. Studies show nature inspired activities simultaneously decrease for youth in financially stabilized countries with mental health issues becoming a connection to higher screen time levels. However, the higher count in activities spent experiencing the outdoors produced positive results in mental health among adolescents.

Digital technologies emitted approximately 4% of world Greenhouse-gas emissions in the year 2019 and the number could be two times larger by the year 2025. For comparison, the paper pulp and print industries emitted together about 1% in 2010 and about 0.9% in 2012

Let's check what people think about screen time

Our personal experience

Our personal experience

Consideration

In our opinion is important to be self-controlled in screen time, for example putting limits in the use of apps like tik tok. It's definetely better to reduce the time we spend on devices for our health and for our social life. It's better going out than scrolling tiktoks.

Experiences

This morning we had the opportunity to talk with adults from all over the world: for example, Brazil, Turkey and Mexico.

At the beginning when they arrived, we were really excited because we didn’t know what to expect.

We had prepared lots of questions to ask them, but when we started talking the conversation went on. In particular, we remember the first one who is a friendly Brazilian girl called Isabella. With her, we understand that Brazil and Italy are very similar and more than we thought. For example, we have the same weather and we give the same importance to food.

After this girl we had two boys from Brazil and Mexico that were really funny and cool.

With the Brazilian we talked about our experience in Ireland, while with the Mexican we talked more about Italy, food and schools.

In the second group there were three beautiful girls from Brazil and Turkey, with them we talked about the holidays we would do in the future and the differences between Ireland and their countries.

We really loved this experience since we understand that English is a bridge to communicate with the world.
