Venemous cabbage is cabbage that contains the gene that produces the poison in scorpion tails which makes the cabbage toxic to insects.
The gene responsible for the toxin in the scorpion is cloned on a vector using nucleotide sequencing. The vector is the object that gets inserted into the cabbage during its embryo stage. The vector is used to produce a modified DNA when crossed with the seed DNA.
Benefits
Scorpion cabbage was made to help limit pesticide use while stopping pests from eating the crop. The pests are killed by the toxins within the cabbage.
The use of scorpion cabbages:
-Costs less to provide yearly crops
-Reduces pest attacks and damage caused by pests
-Reduces dangerous pesticide usage
-Genetically modified organisms can be defined as organisms in which the genetic material has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally.
Cons
Cons
The genetic modification can harm the cabbage plants by infecting non GMO populations.
With the decrease in the insect population, the ecosystem can be altered.
The virus will alter the food chain and impact other populations which will eventually harm humans.
Scientists and farmers simply inject the venom directly into the plant's fertilized gamete or seed. The venom has been altered to be harmful to insects but not humans.
Injecting venomous content into cabbages is not ethical. Although the venom does not harm humans or the cabbage its self, the venom does just as much damage as pesticides. The toxin can kill insects and lower the population. The venom does not directly effect humans but if the food chain is thrown off course, humans will eventually be impacted.
